Concrete segregation: find where uniformity was lost
Segregation is the loss of uniform distribution of concrete constituents. Coarse aggregate, mortar, paste or water separates during mixing, transport, discharge, placement or consolidation, so different parts of the placed concrete no longer represent the intended mix.
Segregation, bleeding and honeycombing are related—but not identical
Segregation is general separation of constituents. Bleeding is specifically the upward movement of water in fresh concrete. Honeycombing is a hardened void defect that can result from poor consolidation, blocked flow, leakage or segregation. Correct diagnosis matters because the prevention is not always the same.
Where segregation starts
Visible signs during placement
- Coarse aggregate piles at the end/bottom of a discharge path.
- Watery or mortar-rich zones separated from aggregate-rich zones.
- Concrete that will not remain cohesive around reinforcement.
- Excessive bleed channels together with settlement.
- Rock pockets revealed after stripping.
- Large variation in fresh density or aggregate distribution within one placement.
Worked troubleshooting: pump discharge becomes coarse and harsh
If concrete sampled at the pump outlet appears less cohesive than at the truck, do not immediately add water. Compare pump line setup, priming, pressure, mix grading/paste volume, slump loss, admixture timing and sampling. The first point where separation appears is a powerful clue: if truck samples are stable but outlet samples are not, the transport/placement system deserves as much attention as the original mix.
Prevention by stage
At design/trial stage
Use a balanced combined grading, enough paste/fines for cohesion, controlled free water and a compatible admixture. Test the mixture through realistic transport/holding/pumping conditions where relevant.
At batching
Correct aggregate moisture, avoid uncontrolled water and verify admixture dosing/mixing sequence.
At placement
Control drop and flow path, place near final position, use suitable lift depths and consolidate systematically.
At form/reinforcement planning
Ensure the aggregate size and concrete rheology can pass through the actual reinforcement geometry; seal forms against grout loss.
Do not “fix” unstable concrete by making it wetter
Water may make concrete appear easier to move while reducing cohesion and changing w/cm. If stability is poor, identify whether the underlying cause is grading, paste volume, aggregate moisture, admixture, slump loss or placement method. Controlled trials are safer and more reproducible than site improvisation.
If segregation is discovered after hardening
Assess the extent and consequences before patching. Surface appearance alone cannot prove whether a defect is shallow or affects cover/bond/section. Significant aggregate pockets, voids or exposed reinforcement may require engineering investigation and an approved repair procedure.
