Cement truck, concrete truck, transit mixer: the names sound interchangeable, but the material is not
In casual speech, a drum-shaped ready-mix truck is often called a “cement truck.” Technically, cement is only the powdered binder; the rotating-drum vehicle normally carries fresh concrete. A bulk cement tanker is a different vehicle carrying dry cement powder.

Transit-mixed, central-mixed and shrink-mixed concrete
“Transit mixer” is also used loosely for the truck itself, but ready-mixed concrete can be classified by where mixing is completed. In transit-mixed production, mixing is completed in the truck drum. Central-mixed concrete is fully mixed in a stationary plant before transport, with the truck primarily agitating it. Shrink-mixed concrete is partially mixed at the plant and completed in the truck.
The delivery vehicle can look almost identical in each case. The plant/batch record—not the truck silhouette—tells you the mixing method.
How the drum charges, agitates and discharges
Helical blades inside the inclined drum move concrete inward when the drum turns in the charging/mixing direction. Reverse rotation moves concrete toward the rear chute for discharge. During travel the drum typically turns slowly to maintain uniformity; the appropriate revolutions/speed follow the equipment, producer and governing delivery procedure.
Do not rely on a universal “90-minute rule”
Concrete workability and permitted discharge time depend on the project specification, temperature, mixture, admixtures, production/delivery standard and site conditions. A truck's rotating drum slows segregation/stiffening but does not stop cement hydration. Check the batch ticket and governing acceptance procedure rather than applying one internet time limit to every load.
Receiving checklist for a ready-mix truck
- Confirm supplier, mix designation and project element.
- Check batch time and any project delivery-time requirements.
- Verify ticket quantities/admixtures and permitted water additions.
- Inspect obvious signs of leakage, segregation or unusual consistency before discharge.
- Perform required fresh-concrete tests at the specified sampling point.
- Record any water/admixture added at site under the approved procedure.
- Coordinate discharge rate with placement crew/pump so the truck is not held unnecessarily.
Transit mixer vs volumetric mixer
A volumetric mixer stores aggregate, cementitious material, water and admixtures separately and meters them into a mixer at the point of discharge. This can reduce waste for intermittent/small pours and allows controlled changes where permitted, but calibration and proportioning control remain essential. It is not simply a “better transit mixer”; it is a different production system.
Why terminology matters on a project
Calling a concrete mixer a “cement truck” is harmless in ordinary conversation, but procurement/logistics should distinguish dry binder delivery from fresh concrete delivery. Ordering a cement tanker, mixer truck, pump or volumetric service involves different materials, equipment, access and quality-control requirements.
