Concrete vibration: remove entrapped air without turning placement into guesswork
Ordinary freshly placed concrete contains entrapped air and needs consolidation so it fills around reinforcement, corners and form faces. Internal vibration temporarily fluidises the concrete, allowing gravity to close voids. The objective is uniform consolidation—not “vibrate for exactly 10 seconds everywhere.”
Why vibration matters
ACI technical guidance notes that concrete allowed to harden with large entrapped voids can be nonuniform, weak, porous and poorly bonded to reinforcement. Honeycombing is often the visible consequence. Proper consolidation improves contact with reinforcement/forms and reduces large voids.

How long should the vibrator stay in?
Use visual/behavioral cues and the approved procedure, not a universal stopwatch value. ACI guidance says vibration can be discontinued when rising entrapped-air bubbles stop breaking at the surface. The exact time depends on mixture consistency, vibrator size/frequency, lift and geometry. Withdraw steadily so the hole closes.
If extended vibration appears to bring excessive mortar/fines to the surface, first examine mixture stability and consistency rather than deliberately under-vibrating a harsh mix.
Five common vibration mistakes
- Using the vibrator to push concrete sideways: this can encourage segregation and leaves uncertain coverage.
- Too-deep lifts: lower concrete may never receive effective energy.
- Missing the previous lift: creates weak interfaces/lift lines where layers do not knit.
- Contacting forms/rebar indiscriminately: can damage forms or shift reinforcement depending on procedure.
- Assuming high slump means no consolidation: conventional high-slump concrete can still contain entrapped air; true self-consolidating concrete is a different performance system.
Congested reinforcement: fix the system, not just the operator
If a vibrator cannot pass between bars, the problem may be Dmax, reinforcement detailing/access, mixture rheology or placement sequence—not operator effort. Consider a smaller suitable vibrator, revised aggregate size/mix, access openings or an appropriately qualified self-consolidating mixture under the project process.
Revibration: when it can help
ACI notes that revibration can be beneficial while the vibrator can still penetrate the concrete under its own action, helping reduce settlement-related voids/cracks and surface air voids. It must occur before concrete has stiffened beyond the applicable window and should follow the project's placement procedure.
QC clues that consolidation is wrong
- Honeycombing repeatedly at the same congested zone or wall base.
- Large surface voids concentrated at upper lifts.
- Visible lift lines with poor continuity.
- Rock pockets around reinforcement.
- Form leakage combined with aggregate-rich surfaces.
- Highly variable finish from different operators/sections.
