What Is Architectural Concrete?
Architectural concrete is concrete that is designed and finished to be seen, not just to carry load. This page explains what sets it apart and why it needs extra care at both the mix-design and formwork stage.
Structural concrete vs. architectural concrete
Ordinary structural concrete is specified almost entirely by performance — strength, durability, workability — because it will usually be hidden behind plaster, cladding, flooring or backfill. Architectural concrete is left exposed as the final finished surface of the building, so it has to meet structural requirements and a visual standard: consistent colour, a chosen surface texture, sharp arrises (edges), and no visible defects like honeycombing, blowholes or colour blotching.
Common architectural concrete finishes
- Off-form (fair-face) concrete — a smooth, uniform finish taken directly from carefully selected formwork, with no additional surface treatment.
- Exposed aggregate — the surface cement paste is removed (by washing, brushing or light acid etching before full set) to reveal the coarse aggregate underneath, giving a textured, often decorative look.
- Board-marked / textured formwork finish — timber boards, form liners or patterned formwork imprint their texture or grain onto the concrete surface.
- Coloured / pigmented concrete — integral pigments or specific cement/aggregate combinations are used to achieve a consistent target colour.
- Polished concrete — the hardened surface is ground and polished in stages, often used for architectural floors.
Why the mix design and process need extra care
Because every visible imperfection matters, architectural concrete typically demands tighter control than structural concrete on the same job:
- Consistent materials batch to batch — the same cement source, aggregate source and admixture dosage are held constant, since even small material changes can shift the finished colour.
- Formwork quality — joints, ties and release agents are chosen specifically to avoid leaving marks, and formwork is usually cleaned and treated before every pour.
- Careful placing and compaction — poured and vibrated in a way that avoids trapping air against the form face (which causes blowholes) and avoids segregation (which causes honeycombing) — see our guides on honeycombing and bleeding for more on both.
- Trial panels — a full-size sample panel is often cast first, using the actual mix, formwork and finishing method, so the client can approve the appearance before the real pour.
Frequently asked questions
Is architectural concrete a different material from structural concrete?
Not necessarily a different material — it can use the same basic mix design principles as structural concrete (still designed for strength and durability by the applicable code) but with tighter control over consistency, plus extra attention to formwork and finishing to achieve the required appearance.
Does architectural concrete cost more?
Usually yes, because of the extra quality control, trial panels, specialised formwork, and often slower placing rates needed to protect the finish.
