Aggregate moisture correction: the water already hiding in your concrete

A mix design is commonly proportioned on a defined aggregate moisture basis such as saturated-surface-dry (SSD). Stockpiles rarely stay at that condition. If wet sand carries free surface water into the mixer and the added water is not reduced, the effective water-cementitious ratio rises even though the batch ticket may look unchanged.

Four terms to keep separate

The calculation when your design aggregate mass is SSD

Let MSSD be the design aggregate mass, A absorption as a decimal of OD mass, and MC total moisture as a decimal of OD mass.

OD mass = MSSD / (1 + A)

Wet batch mass = OD mass × (1 + MC)

Free water contributed = OD mass × (MC − A)

When MC is greater than A, the aggregate contributes free water and the mixer-water addition should normally be reduced by that amount. When MC is below A, the aggregate is drier than SSD and can absorb water; the required production treatment depends on the batching procedure and specification.

Worked example: wet sand correction

A preliminary mix contains 700 kg/m³ of fine aggregate at SSD. The sand absorption is 1.0% and a current stockpile test gives 5.0% total moisture, both on an OD basis.

  1. OD mass = 700 / 1.01 = 693.1 kg.
  2. Wet sand to batch = 693.1 × 1.05 = 727.7 kg.
  3. Free water in the wet sand = 693.1 × (0.05 − 0.01) = 27.7 kg, approximately 27.7 litres of water.

If the design called for 180 kg/m³ of mixing water and no other aggregate contributed or absorbed water, the mixer addition would be about 152.3 kg/m³ after this fine-aggregate correction. The approved design water has not changed; only the source of that water has changed.

Why “5% moisture means subtract 5% of sand weight from water” is wrong

Total moisture includes the water associated with absorption as well as free surface water. If the design aggregate quantity is SSD, only the moisture above (or below) SSD changes the free-water balance. You also have to convert between the SSD design mass and the OD basis used by the percentage definitions.

Field workflow

  1. Confirm the moisture basis used by the approved mix design.
  2. Measure current fine and coarse aggregate moisture at a frequency appropriate to weather and stockpile changes.
  3. Use the tested absorption values for the same aggregate sources.
  4. Convert design quantities to actual wet batch weights.
  5. Adjust mixer water for net free water contributed or absorbed.
  6. Record the correction with the batch so unusual slump or strength can be traced later.
