C30/37 concrete: external exposure is a specification problem, not just a strength upgrade
C30/37 identifies 30 MPa characteristic cylinder strength and 37 MPa characteristic cube strength. It is often encountered in reinforced structural work, but selecting it because a component is “outside” is not enough: the actual exposure, cover, working life and specification route must be considered.
Why “use C30/37 outdoors” is too simplistic
External concrete can face very different mechanisms: carbonation under wet/dry cycling, freeze-thaw, deicing salts, marine chlorides or none of these at a severe level. BS 8500 gives UK national specification guidance that relates concrete quality to exposure and other design choices. A strength class may be part of the answer, but it is not a substitute for the exposure assessment.
Durability can govern the water-cement ratio
A preliminary strength-based w/c estimate should always be checked against the project's durability limit. If the exposure requirement is more restrictive, the durability value governs. This is exactly why a fixed C30/37 “mix ratio” has little engineering value: two projects with the same class can legitimately require different concrete compositions.
Cover and concrete quality work together
For reinforced concrete, durability is not achieved by concrete grade alone. Nominal cover, exposure, workmanship, crack control and concrete quality form a system. Changing one variable may alter what is acceptable for another. Use the structural/specification documents rather than a generic web table to decide the combination.
Worked field reasoning: high slump requested at the pump
If a C30/37 delivery is too stiff for the pump, adding uncontrolled water may change the w/c that underpins both strength and durability. First verify what consistence was specified, how much time has elapsed, concrete temperature, aggregate moisture and the producer's approved adjustment procedure. A controlled admixture adjustment can be very different from arbitrary water addition.
C30/37 checks before the pour
- Confirm the exact exposure/design life/cover basis from the project.
- Confirm the selected concrete specification route and full designation.
- Specify consistence for the actual placing method.
- Check aggregate size against reinforcement congestion.
- Use current batch moisture and controlled water additions.
- Follow the project's sampling, conformity and curing requirements.
