UK concrete specification uses the EN 206 exposure-class framework together with BS 8500, the complementary British Standard. The exposure designation describes the deterioration mechanism; the exact UK composition and strength requirements depend on the current BS 8500 provisions, cement/combination, intended working life and project specification.

BS 8500 is the complementary UK standard used with BS EN 206

BS 8500 adds UK-specific specification routes, terminology, cement/combination provisions and durability guidance. Treating it as though it were merely a small appendix to the European document understates its role and can lead users to assume that one generic EN exposure table maps directly onto UK practice.

Why this calculator does not auto-fill BS 8500 limits

BS 8500:2023 changed important durability provisions, and a live project can also call up a specific edition and intended working life. The calculator therefore records exposure class as context but only applies a maximum w/c or minimum cementitious content when you enter a verified project value. That prevents a convenient dropdown from masquerading as a compliance check.

Several exposure mechanisms can apply at once

An external reinforced element can simultaneously face carbonation, chlorides and freeze-thaw. The specification must consider every applicable mechanism and combine the resulting requirements correctly. Selecting a single class because it “looks worst” is not a reliable substitute for the project durability assessment.
