C20/25 concrete: what the strength class tells you—and what it does not
C20/25 identifies a characteristic compressive-strength class: 20 MPa on the standard cylinder basis and 25 MPa on the cube basis. It does not define one cement:sand:aggregate ratio, one slump or one durability specification.
Strength class is only one line of the concrete specification
For a UK project, BS 8500 works alongside BS EN 206 to provide national provisions and specifying guidance. The required concrete can also depend on exposure, intended working life, reinforcement/cover, chloride class, consistence, aggregate size and permitted cement or combination. A user should therefore resist the common shortcut of choosing C20/25 from a generic application list and assuming the rest of the mixture is automatically suitable.
Why a fixed C20/25 ratio is unreliable
Two C20/25 mixtures can use different cementitious contents and aggregate proportions because aggregate grading, particle shape, specific gravity, moisture, air and admixture response differ. Formal proportioning works from the required performance and measured materials, then proves the proposed mixture through production or trial data.
If your task is only preliminary quantity estimating, use an explicit estimating assumption. Do not label a volume recipe as a BS 8500-compliant C20/25 design without the supporting specification and verification.
When C20/25 may be the wrong question
If the element is reinforced and exposed to carbonation, chlorides, freeze-thaw or aggressive ground conditions, the governing concrete quality can be driven by the exposure/specification route rather than the nominal strength class you first had in mind. Likewise, a structural designer may require a different class for load, stiffness or detailing reasons. Always start with the project documents and exposure assessment.

Is C20/25 the same as “25 N concrete”?
The second number is the characteristic cube strength associated with the C20/25 class, while the first is the corresponding cylinder strength. But a shorthand strength description does not carry the full concrete specification.
Can I use C20/25 for foundations?
Only if the structural and durability specification permits it. Foundation concrete can be affected by ground conditions, reinforcement, exposure and project-specific requirements; do not choose the class from a generic web application table.
