Cementitious Content: A Calculation Is Not a Durability Approval

Dividing free water by an adopted w/c gives a useful starting cementitious quantity. For UK concrete, however, the permitted cement/combination and any durability composition limits must be checked against the project and current BS 8500 provisions before that number is treated as acceptable.

The arithmetic is straightforward

A model using 175 kg/m³ water at w/c 0.50 gives 350 kg/m³ by simple division. That tells you what binder quantity is associated with the chosen water and ratio. It does not tell you whether the binder combination is permitted, whether the project requires a different minimum, or whether another composition restriction governs.

Why the binder combination matters in the UK

BS 8500 recognises different cement and combination routes. Durability requirements can depend on the actual combination, exposure and intended working life. A generic “minimum cement content by exposure” copied from memory can therefore be unsafe, especially across standard revisions.

The calculator intentionally requires a verified project minimum to be entered explicitly. It does not infer one from the exposure dropdown.

More cementitious material is not automatically more durable

Durability also depends on effective w/c, air where required, compaction, cover, crack control and curing. Excess paste can increase shrinkage, heat, cost and embodied carbon. A good mixture satisfies the verified requirements with workable, reproducible proportions rather than simply maximising cement content.

What to verify before approving the quantity

A low-carbon mixture needs the same discipline

Reducing Portland-cement clinker can be valuable, but additions cannot be treated as a universal one-for-one substitution in every UK exposure. The permitted combination and the way it is accounted for must be taken from the governing specification and product system, then verified through trials and production control.
