The k-Value Concept for SCMs
EN 206 allows a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) such as fly ash or silica fume to be taken into account in the water-cement ratio and cement content calculations used for durability, through the concept of an equivalent (or ‘effective’) cement content and a k-value.
How the k-value works
Rather than treating an SCM as simply diluting the cement content, EN 206 lets a proportion of the SCM’s mass be counted as equivalent to cement, weighted by a k-value: equivalent cement content = cement + k × SCM, up to a maximum SCM proportion set by the standard. A commonly cited k-value is 0.4 for fly ash conforming to EN 450-1 used with CEM I, and 0.6 for the higher-efficiency silica fume, subject to the limits and conditions the standard sets on their use.
The equivalent performance of combinations clause
This mechanism sits within EN 206’s broader ‘equivalent performance of combinations’ concept — the idea that a cement-SCM combination can be treated as meeting a durability requirement if it can be shown, by an accepted concept such as the k-value or by direct performance testing, to perform equivalently to a reference CEM I mix. This is a genuinely different mechanism from the UK’s approach, where BS 8500 instead defines fixed named cement/combination designations that already bundle a Portland cement and an SCM proportion into one designated cement type, rather than calculating an equivalent cement content via a k-value at the mix-design stage.
How this differs from a simple % replacement
A simple ‘% cement replacement’ framing, common in some other national systems, just substitutes SCM for cement mass-for-mass or volume-for-volume, and does not on its own account for the SCM’s different reactivity relative to Portland cement in the way the k-value does for durability calculations. The k-value approach specifically weights the SCM’s contribution to the durability-relevant equivalent cement content, rather than assuming SCM and cement are interchangeable one-for-one.
