EN 206 is European. Concrete specification is still local.

Two projects can both reference EN 206 and use the same strength and exposure labels, yet still require different constituent combinations, durability provisions or verification procedures. European countries implement the framework through their own national publications, complementary standards and accepted practice.

The common layer: EN 206

EN 206 provides the shared framework for concrete specification, fresh and hardened properties, constituent requirements, composition limitations, production control and assessment. In 2026 that framework moved into the EN 206-1 / EN 206-2 generation.

That common framework is valuable because a strength class such as C30/37 or an exposure label such as XC4 has a shared technical meaning. It does not mean every country must arrive at one identical concrete recipe.

The national layer is broader than one document type

Different countries implement and supplement the European framework in different ways. The UK uses BS 8500 as a complementary British Standard alongside BS EN 206. Germany uses DIN 1045-2 within its national concrete standards system to set application rules and requirements. Other countries have their own national publications and provisions.

For that reason this site uses the broader term national provisions and complementary standards rather than implying that every country's implementation follows one identical document structure.

A practical example: why copied exposure tables are risky

It is tempting to build a calculator that asks for “XC4,” looks up one maximum w/c and minimum cement value, and declares the result compliant. That can be wrong. The applicable limiting values may depend on the country, cement or combination, intended life, cover/specification route, air entrainment or other project conditions.

BS 8500:2023 is a useful illustration: the revision changed how some durability limiting values are expressed, including removing minimum cement content and water/cement ratio as limiting values for carbonation-induced corrosion. A generic “EN 206 exposure table” applied automatically to a UK project can therefore be misleading.

How the calculator handles this now

The Europe, UK and Germany calculators record the exposure class for context but do not automatically invent composition limits from it. If you have verified a project maximum w/c or minimum cement content, you can enter it and see exactly how it changes the starting mixture. If you leave the fields blank, no hidden limit is applied.

This is intentionally less “automatic,” but more trustworthy. It separates a transparent proportioning model from the professional task of identifying the requirements that actually govern the project.

What the country-specific pages do—and do not do

The UK and German sections use the right terminology and explain the relevant national context. They are not automated standards-certification engines. A country page can help you ask the right questions without reproducing every proprietary standard table or assuming that one historical limit applies to every cement combination and project.
