Why the Same Mix Differs by Country
A specification such as ‘C30/37, XC4’ looks like a single, precise requirement, but the concrete that legally satisfies it is not identical in every EN 206 country. This page explains why, and why this site itself offers separate national calculators rather than one generic EN 206 calculator.
EN 206 sets recommended defaults, not final values
EN 206 establishes the framework common to all its member countries — the exposure class system, the concept of durability limiting values (maximum w/c, minimum cement content, minimum strength class, minimum air content), and the general mix design method. For many of the actual numeric limiting values, though, EN 206 gives recommended default figures and explicitly allows each country’s national annex to set its own values instead, reflecting local materials, climate, construction practice and accumulated experience.
How the national annexes diverge
Germany’s DIN 1045-2, France’s NF EN 206/CN, and the UK’s BS 8500 — see the UK calculator and the Germany calculator as two worked examples of national annexes in action — each fix their own limiting values for the exposure classes, sometimes stricter than the EN 206 default, sometimes structured differently. A mix genuinely compliant with the German national annex for XC4 exposure is not automatically compliant with the UK’s BS 8500 requirement for the same nominal exposure class, even though both start from the same EN 206 base classification.
