Can you convert 3000, 4000 or 5000 psi into one mix ratio?
Not reliably. PSI specifies compressive-strength performance; a cement:sand:gravel ratio describes ingredients on a chosen measurement basis. ACI mixture proportioning connects strength with w/cm, aggregate, air, slump, durability and material properties, so there is no universal 1:x:y recipe for each PSI.
Why online ratio charts disagree
You will find 3000 psi labelled 1:2:3 on one page and a different ratio on another. Both may be rough small-batch traditions, but neither proves the resulting concrete will meet a project specification. Different sand/gravel grading, moisture, cement, air and water can produce very different concrete from the same bucket ratio.
What changes as specified strength rises
A more useful way to design than choosing a ratio
- Confirm specified strength and exposure requirements.
- Establish the required average strength from production variability.
- Select the governing maximum w/cm from strength/durability requirements.
- Choose water demand for slump, aggregate size and air condition.
- Calculate cementitious content and coarse/fine aggregate by absolute volume.
- Correct for aggregate moisture and absorption.
- Verify with trial batches and production data.
Rule-of-thumb ratios can still have a place
For non-engineered small work, a packaged concrete product or established local recipe may be practical when used exactly as its manufacturer/local requirements permit. But do not translate that rule of thumb into an ACI project mixture or claim a guaranteed PSI without testing. For structural/exposure-controlled work, follow the project specification and approved mix submittal.
