C25/30 mix ratio: why the familiar 1:1.5:3 answer is not a BS 8500 design

C25/30 means 25 MPa characteristic cylinder strength and 30 MPa characteristic cube strength. It does not prescribe a universal cement:sand:stone ratio. UK structural concrete should be specified and supplied to the project requirements, with durability and production control considered alongside strength.

Why the ratio search is understandable—but incomplete

Simple volume ratios are convenient for explaining concrete ingredients, so they appear frequently in search results. But the same 1:1.5:3 volume recipe can produce different water demand, yield and strength with different sand, coarse aggregate, moisture and cement. It also says nothing about exposure, air, chloride limits, consistence or permitted cement combinations.

For structural or specified work, treat C25/30 as a performance class. Use the designed/designated specification route applicable to the project rather than reverse-engineering compliance from a rule-of-thumb ratio.

Designed concrete and designated concrete are not interchangeable labels

BS 8500 provides more than one route for specifying concrete. A designed concrete specification states required performance characteristics, while designated concretes package defined requirements for common UK situations. A similar-looking “RC” designation should not be assumed to mean that the strength class alone is the entire specification. Exposure, cover, working life and other requirements still matter.

Workability should follow the placement

A slab poured directly from a chute, a pumped reinforced wall and a congested beam may all require different fresh-concrete behaviour even when the strength class is identical. Choosing a higher water content simply to gain slump can undermine the intended w/c. The mix should obtain the required consistence through a controlled combination of water, aggregate grading and compatible admixture.

Field example: rain changes the mix without changing the order

The delivery may still be labelled C25/30, but a wet fine-aggregate stockpile can add free water unless the plant corrects the batch. Proper moisture correction increases the wet aggregate mass and reduces mixer water so the approved free-water content remains consistent. That is one reason a grade cannot be reduced to a bag ratio.
