Why the Production Mean Must Sit Above the Characteristic Strength
A concrete class such as C30/37 defines characteristic strength, not the exact result every batch should produce. Real production varies. A producer therefore needs enough mean-strength margin that the distribution of results can satisfy the applicable conformity criteria.
The statistical idea
If a process were centred exactly on the characteristic strength, ordinary production variation would create too many low results. The working mean therefore has to sit above the characteristic value. How far above depends on the production process, available test history, variability, conformity method and applicable specification—not on a single universal “EN 206 margin” that can safely be copied into every project.
Why this calculator asks for an editable planning margin
The Europe calculator needs a planning strength to demonstrate how a preliminary proportioning scenario changes as the assumed strength target changes. Its margin field is therefore an explicit model input. The default is a worked-example starting assumption, not a claim that EN 206 mandates that number for every producer.
For real work, replace the assumption with a value supported by the producer's quality data, initial testing/procedures, the governing specification and the conformity framework actually applicable to the project.

What a useful strength record contains
Do not judge process capability from a single cube or cylinder. Keep the test age, specimen type, curing, sampling location, batch identity, concrete temperature, fresh properties and relevant mixture adjustments with the strength result. A trend of properly identified results is what allows variability and corrective action to be understood.
Frequently asked questions
Is +8 N/mm² a universal EN 206 target margin?
No. It can be a convenient educational example, but the production target for real work must be justified from the applicable quality/conformity framework and the producer's actual variability.
Does a single low result automatically define the whole production as nonconforming?
Not necessarily. The applicable conformity rules consider defined sampling and assessment criteria. A low result still requires investigation, but it should not be interpreted outside the governing procedure.
Does exposure class determine the strength margin?
Exposure can impose composition and minimum-strength requirements through the project/national framework, but the statistical production margin is a different question.
