How EN 206 Mix Design Works

EN 206 does not fix a single recipe. It sets durability limiting values by exposure class, and the mix is proportioned by the absolute-volume method around whichever requirement — strength or durability — governs. The steps below take a design through to a preliminary mix, ready for trial batching.

The steps

  1. Pick the required strength class, e.g. C25/30 or C30/37.
  2. Pick the exposure class (or classes) for the project — X0, XC1–XC4, XD1–XD3, XS1–XS3, XF1–XF4, XA1–XA3.
  3. Read the EN 206 durability limiting values for that exposure class: the maximum water-cement ratio, the minimum cement content, the minimum strength class, and, for freeze-thaw exposure, the minimum air content.
  4. Set the target mean strength, fcm = fck + a margin (about 8 N/mm²), from the characteristic strength fck.
  5. Estimate the free water content from the maximum aggregate size and the required consistence class.
  6. Adopt whichever water-cement ratio is lower: the one implied by the target strength, or the exposure class’s durability-maximum w/c.
  7. Calculate cement content: cement = water ÷ w/c, then raise it to the exposure class’s minimum cement content if that is higher.
  8. Split the remaining volume between coarse and fine aggregate by the absolute-volume method.
  9. Confirm the design with trial batches before use on a project.

Strength or durability — which governs?

For a low exposure class such as X0, the water-cement ratio implied by the strength class alone can be the limiting figure. For a more aggressive exposure — chlorides, freeze-thaw, chemical attack — the exposure class’s durability limits (its maximum w/c and minimum cement content) are usually stricter than the target strength requires, and it is the exposure class that ends up governing the mix.

Frequently asked questions

What sets the water-cement ratio?

Two things compete: the w/c implied by the target mean strength fcm, and the maximum w/c set by the project’s exposure class under EN 206. The lower of the two is adopted, so durability can require a richer mix than strength alone would.

Do I still need trial batches?

Yes. The EN 206 proportioning gives a preliminary mix; trial batches with the actual project materials confirm strength, workability and durability before use.
