Starting Mixing Water: What the Table Really Means

ACI PRC-211.1-22 Table 5.3.3 gives an approximate starting water content from slump band, nominal maximum aggregate size and whether the mixture is air-entrained. It is a trial-batch starting point—not a promise that every local aggregate will reach the target slump at that water content.

The 2022 guide includes distinct 1–2, 3–4, 5–6 and 6–7 in. slump bands. The calculator uses those current bands rather than collapsing 5–6 in. into the 6–7 in. row.

Why the table value is only a starting point

What to do when the first trial misses slump

Do not immediately turn the problem into “add more water.” First confirm aggregate moisture, batching accuracy and admixture dosage. Then decide whether the next trial should adjust water, admixture, paste volume or aggregate proportions while keeping any project maximum w/cm intact. Record the reason for the adjustment so the next result is interpretable.

Air content is a separate project decision

Table 5.3.3 also gives reference air values, but the required air for a real project comes from the adopted code and specification. For this reason, the calculator asks the user to enter the project target air when air-entrained concrete is selected rather than silently guessing an exposure requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Does a bigger aggregate always mean less water?

It is a useful general trend in the starting table, but actual water demand still depends on shape, texture, grading and the rest of the mixture.

Can I use the table above 7 in. slump?

Not as though it were another ordinary row. High-slump mixtures commonly depend on admixture technology and should be established with the actual system and trial data. The calculator intentionally stops its table-based model at 7 in.

Should stock moisture be added to the design water?

No. Surface moisture on aggregate already contributes free water to the batch and is deducted from the water added at the mixer; dry aggregate can absorb water. Use the moisture-correction step.
