Water-Cementitious Ratio: Starting Relationship and Project Cap
ACI PRC-211.1-22 provides an approximate relationship between 28-day compressive strength and w/cm for preliminary proportioning. A real project can impose a lower maximum w/cm for durability. Those are two separate sources of information and the calculator keeps them separate.
Why w/cm rather than only w/c
US concrete commonly uses supplementary cementitious materials alongside portland cement. The water-cementitious ratio therefore compares free water with the cementitious system used for the applicable proportioning/specification basis, rather than assuming all binder mass is portland cement.
ACI PRC-211.1-22 Table 5.3.4: the strength starting point
Table 5.3.4 gives approximate w/cm values associated with 28-day compressive strengths for non-air-entrained and air-entrained concrete. The values are useful for a first trial, but actual strength depends on the specific cementitious materials, aggregates, admixtures, curing and production conditions. Historical data or trials should refine the relationship for the actual mixture system.
The durability maximum comes from the project/codeānot ACI 211.1
The edition of ACI 318 or another code adopted for the project can impose maximum w/cm requirements based on exposure. Local adoption may not match the newest published ACI edition. This site therefore asks for a verified project maximum w/cm rather than silently applying a hard-coded exposure table.
If you enter a verified maximum that is lower than the ACI 211.1 strength starting value, the lower project value controls the calculation.
The actual ratio depends on the water ledger
Stockpile moisture matters. Surface water on wet aggregate contributes to the batch's free water; dry aggregate can absorb mixing water. The effective ratio can drift materially if the SSD calculation is batched without moisture correction.
A very low ratio can still produce poor concrete
If low w/cm makes the mixture too stiff to place or consolidate, voids and honeycombing can outweigh the theoretical permeability benefit. Use compatible water-reducing admixtures and appropriate paste/aggregate proportions, then verify fresh and hardened properties in trials.

Does selecting an exposure category automatically change w/cm?
No. Exposure is recorded as context only. The applicable code/project limit must be checked and entered deliberately.
Is lower always better?
No. Lower w/cm can improve strength and permeability resistance, but the concrete still has to be placeable, compactable, finishable and compatible with the actual materials.
