Trial Batches and Required Average Strength

A mix design's target strength for proportioning purposes is not the specified strength itself, but a statistically adjusted required average strength — and every mix design should be confirmed by trial batching before use.

ACI 318 §26.4.3 requires that concrete mixtures be proportioned to a required average compressive strength (f′cr) that exceeds the specified compressive strength f′c, rather than proportioning to f′c directly. This margin exists because concrete strength test results are never perfectly uniform, even from a well-controlled production process — proportioning to hit f′c on average would mean roughly half of all individual test results fall below it. f′cr is set high enough above f′c that the specified strength is met with an acceptable statistical confidence, given the mix's actual variability.

Laboratory trial batches vs field trial batches (ACI 301)

A laboratory trial batch is mixed and tested under controlled laboratory conditions to establish or confirm a mix design's proportions before it's used anywhere. A field trial batch, addressed under ACI 301 (the standard specification for structural concrete), goes a step further — it's produced with the actual materials intended for the project, and often with the actual batching and mixing equipment, to confirm the mix performs as expected under real production conditions. Field trial batches catch interactions between materials, equipment, and site conditions that a laboratory trial batch alone might not reveal.

Why is the required average strength higher than f′c?

Because concrete strength varies from batch to batch even under good quality control. Designing the mix to average exactly f′c would mean roughly half of all test results fall below it. f′cr builds in a statistical margin so that the specified strength is met with high confidence despite normal variability.

When is Table 5.3.2.2 used instead of Table 5.3.2.1?

Table 5.3.2.1 is used when the producer has a sufficient record of standard deviation from prior production with similar materials. Table 5.3.2.2, which is more conservative, applies when that statistical history isn't available — for a new mix, a new plant, or insufficient prior data.
