Strength-based water-cement ratio

Per ACI 211.1 Table 6.3.4a (non-air-entrained), a design strength above the 5000 psi / 0.48 w/c point on the table needs a lower water-cement ratio still — reaching 6000 psi reliably typically requires a w/c meaningfully below 0.48, often achieved with the help of a high-range water-reducing admixture to keep the mix workable. Air-entrained mixes use a slightly lower w/c again. As always, this strength-based value is only a starting point — it is capped at the ACI 318 durability limit for the project’s exposure classes, and the lower of the two w/c values is adopted, though at this strength level the strength-based value is often already the more restrictive one.
