Estimating Coarse Aggregate from Packing, Not a Fixed Recipe

ACI PRC-211.1-22 uses a dry-rodded bulk-volume relationship to establish a starting coarse-aggregate quantity. The inputs are the nominal maximum aggregate size, the fineness modulus of the sand and the measured dry-rodded unit weight of the coarse aggregate.

What Table 5.3.6 contributes

Table 5.3.6 provides a starting bulk volume of dry-rodded coarse aggregate per unit volume of concrete. It is not a mass by itself. The selected volume fraction is multiplied by the aggregate's measured dry-rodded unit weight and by 27 ft³/yd³ to obtain an oven-dry coarse-aggregate mass for the trial calculation.

The calculator then converts that oven-dry mass to SSD using the entered absorption so the absolute-volume balance is internally consistent.

Why sand fineness modulus matters

Fineness modulus is a compact indicator of the sand grading. Within the guide's starting relationship, a change in sand fineness changes the coarse-aggregate bulk-volume fraction used for the first trial. That does not mean fineness modulus alone proves that the combined grading is ideal; actual particle shape, grading curves, pumpability and finishability still have to be observed in trials.

Three masses that are easy to confuse

A technically useful mix sheet should make clear which basis each number uses. Treating all three as interchangeable is a common source of water and yield errors.

What the starting fraction cannot tell you

It cannot tell you whether the concrete pumps well through a particular line, passes heavily congested reinforcement, finishes cleanly, resists segregation, or uses the most economical combined grading. Those are trial and production questions. If the first trial is harsh or overly sandy, adjust deliberately and document the change rather than assuming the table itself is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

What is dry-rodded unit weight?

It is the mass per unit bulk volume of aggregate measured under the applicable rodding/compaction test procedure. Because it reflects the actual aggregate's packing, using a measured value is more defensible than relying on a generic default.

Why is fine aggregate found differently?

In the common ACI workflow, coarse aggregate is first estimated from the bulk-volume relationship. Fine aggregate then fills the remaining absolute volume after water, cementitious material, coarse aggregate and air are accounted for.

Does the table give the final job quantity?

No. It provides a first-trial starting point. Trials and field performance determine whether aggregate proportions need adjustment.
