What workability is

Workability is how easily fresh concrete can be mixed, placed, compacted and finished. It is commonly measured by the slump test: a cone of fresh concrete is filled, then lifted, and the drop in height — the slump, in mm — is measured. More workable mixes have a higher slump.

Choose it for the job, don’t maximise it

Workability should be chosen for the placing conditions, not maximised. Too little workability and the concrete cannot be compacted properly around reinforcement. Too much, and the mix can segregate or bleed. The right slump depends on how congested the reinforcement is and how the concrete will be placed.

Raise workability with an admixture, not water

Higher workability is normally achieved by using a water-reducing admixture rather than simply adding water. Adding water raises the w/c ratio, which lowers both strength and durability — an admixture can increase workability without that trade-off.

Frequently asked questions

Does more slump mean weaker concrete?

Only if the extra workability comes from added water. An admixture can raise slump without raising the w/c ratio, so strength is not affected the same way.

How is slump linked to water content?
