Common Concrete Mix Design Mistakes to Avoid

A correct calculation can still produce poor concrete if it is applied wrong on site, or if a shortcut is taken along the way. Here are the pitfalls that come up most often, and what to do instead.

Design-stage mistakes

  1. Ignoring the durability water-cement limit. Using the strength-based w/c ratio when the exposure condition under IS 456 actually requires a lower one leaves the concrete less durable than the standard permits.
  2. Treating the Table 1 standard deviation as the real project SD. The IS 10262 Table 2 value is a first-instance assumption used before test data exists. Once test data is available, the calculated site standard deviation should be used instead.
  3. Using the wrong sand grading zone. The grading zone under IS 383 changes the coarse/fine aggregate split, so assuming the wrong zone can give the wrong proportion between them.

Site and execution mistakes

  1. Not correcting for aggregate moisture. Site aggregates carry surface water or absorb water, so the batch water and aggregate weights must be corrected from the SSD (saturated surface-dry) design values — otherwise the actual w/c ratio on site drifts away from what was designed.
  2. Skipping trial batches. The calculated mix is a preliminary proportion. IS 10262 requires trial batches with the actual materials before the mix is used in the works.
  3. Overdosing admixture, or simply adding water for workability. Overdosing an admixture can cause segregation or bleeding; adding water instead raises the w/c ratio and lowers strength and durability. Use the trial-verified dosage and water reduction instead.
