Why exposure conditions matter

IS 456:2000 defines a set of exposure conditions and, for each one, fixes a minimum grade, a maximum free water-cement ratio and a minimum cement content. These durability limits often govern the mix instead of strength — for a severe exposure, the durability w/c cap can be lower than the w/c that strength alone would allow, and in that case the durability limit controls.

Worked note: when durability controls

Suppose the strength requirement suggests a w/c of 0.50, but the structure is in a “severe” exposure where the durability cap is 0.45. The mix must use 0.45 — the lower of the two values. The calculator applies the lower of your strength-based w/c and the project’s exposure-based maximum automatically.

Frequently asked questions

What is an exposure condition?

It describes how aggressive the environment around the concrete is — moisture, seawater, chemical attack, freezing, and similar factors.

Does a higher grade always mean more durable concrete?

A higher grade usually comes with a lower w/c and more cement, which helps durability, but the exposure limits must still be met on their own terms — grade alone does not guarantee it.
