Concrete Grades Explained: M20 to M55

Every set of drawings specifies a concrete grade — M20, M25, M30, M40 and so on. This page explains what the letter and number actually mean, how IS 456:2000 groups the grades, and why the grade alone is not enough to define a mix.

What the grade designation means

In a grade such as “M25”, the M stands for Mix, and the number is the characteristic compressive strength (fck), in N/mm², of a 150 mm cube tested at 28 days. “Characteristic strength” has a specific meaning: it is the strength below which not more than 5% of test results are expected to fall.

How IS 456:2000 groups the grades

IS 456:2000 groups concrete grades into three bands:

Higher grades need lower water-cement ratios and more, or better, cementitious content to reach the higher target strength.

Grade alone does not fix the mix

The grade only fixes the target characteristic strength. The same M30 can need different proportions on two different sites, depending on the cement and aggregates available, the exposure condition, and the workability needed for placing. This is why IS 10262:2019 works from the grade to a full mix design rather than a single fixed recipe.

Frequently asked questions

What does the number after M mean?

It is the characteristic compressive strength (fck), in N/mm², of a 150 mm cube at 28 days.

Is a 7-day test enough?

No. The 28-day age is the reference for characteristic strength. A 7-day result is only an early indicator — typically around two-thirds of the 28-day value for OPC, as a rough guide — and should not be used to accept or reject the concrete.
