Cement Content for Concrete

Once the free water content and the adopted water-cement ratio are known, the cementitious content follows directly — but it must also clear the durability minimum set by IS 456:2000. How cementitious content is calculated

Cementitious content = free water content ÷ adopted w/c ratio. The result must be at least the minimum cement content required by IS 456:2000 for durability, and must not exceed the maximum — IS 456 caps total cementitious content at 450 kg/m³ to limit shrinkage and cracking. You adopt the greater of the calculated value and the durability minimum. “Cementitious” content includes cement plus any mineral admixture such as fly ash or GGBS.

IS 456:2000 Table 5 sets the minimum cement content for reinforced concrete with 20 mm nominal maximum aggregate size:

Confirm the current edition of IS 456 and the exposure classification for your project before using these values.

Worked example

With water at 186 kg/m³ and an adopted w/c of 0.45, cementitious content = 186 ÷ 0.45 = 413 kg/m³. If the exposure minimum is 320 kg/m³, the calculated 413 kg/m³ governs since it is already higher. Had the calculation instead given 300 kg/m³ in a “severe” exposure (minimum 320 kg/m³), the durability minimum of 320 kg/m³ would govern instead.

Does fly ash count toward cement content?

Fly ash and GGBS are part of the cementitious content. Check how your project specifies limits — as OPC content or as total cementitious content.

What if the calculated cement is below the durability minimum?

Use the minimum. The durability requirement from IS 456 always governs when it is higher than the calculated value.
